Below are the most practical connection strategies, ranked by convenience.

Option A: Via Manchester (Best All-Round)

Why: Shortest hop from IoM (45 min), good Funchal frequency (3+ flights/week from MAN), multiple airlines give price competition.

Segment Airlines Time Price Guide (pp, one way)
IOM - Manchester easyJet, Loganair ~45 min £30 - £75
Manchester - Funchal easyJet, Jet2, Ryanair ~4 hours £50 - £150
  • Pro: Short first leg, good Funchal frequency, familiar airport
  • Pro: Multiple airline choices on both legs
  • Con: Not the highest Funchal frequency (London Gatwick has more daily flights)
  • Stopover note: Manchester has good overnight hotel options near the airport if needed

Option B: Via Liverpool (Simplest Short Hop)

Why: Closest/quickest hop from IoM (40 min), highest IOM flight frequency (18/week). But only Jet2 flies Liverpool-Funchal, once per week.

Segment Airlines Time Price Guide (pp, one way)
IOM - Liverpool easyJet, Loganair ~40 min £30 - £70
Liverpool - Funchal Jet2 ~4 hours £60 - £160
  • Pro: Shortest, cheapest first hop; most IOM departure options
  • Con: Only 1 Funchal flight per week (must match the Jet2 departure day exactly)
  • Con: If that one weekly flight doesn’t align with dates, this option falls apart
  • Stopover note: Liverpool hotels are generally affordable

Option C: Via London Gatwick (Best Funchal Frequency)

Why: easyJet flies IOM-Gatwick direct (1 hr 25 min). Gatwick has the most Funchal flights (2/day with easyJet + BA). Offers maximum date flexibility.

Segment Airlines Time Price Guide (pp, one way)
IOM - London Gatwick easyJet ~1 hr 25 min £40 - £100
Gatwick - Funchal easyJet, British Airways ~3 hr 45 min £40 - £130
  • Pro: Best Funchal frequency by far (up to 16 flights/week)
  • Pro: Can book both legs on easyJet (simpler)
  • Pro: British Airways option if you want included bags/flexibility
  • Con: Longer/costlier first hop from IoM
  • Con: London area overnight stays are more expensive
  • Stopover note: Many airport hotels at Gatwick, but pricier than northern options

Option D: Via Bristol

Why: easyJet flies IOM-Bristol direct. Good Funchal frequency (4-6/week). Potentially a middle-ground between Manchester and Gatwick.

Segment Airlines Time Price Guide (pp, one way)
IOM - Bristol easyJet ~1 hour £35 - £80
Bristol - Funchal easyJet, Jet2 ~3 hr 30 min £45 - £130
  • Pro: Reasonable IOM hop, good Funchal frequency
  • Pro: Bristol is a smaller, easier airport to transit
  • Con: Less familiar territory for overnight stays
  • Con: Fewer IOM-Bristol flights than IOM-Manchester/Liverpool

Option E: Via Birmingham

Why: Loganair flies IOM-Birmingham daily. Jet2 and TUI fly Birmingham-Funchal year-round.

Segment Airlines Time Price Guide (pp, one way)
IOM - Birmingham Loganair ~1 hr 15 min £50 - £90
Birmingham - Funchal Jet2, TUI ~4 hours £50 - £140
  • Pro: Daily IOM service, year-round Funchal flights
  • Con: Loganair only on the IOM leg (less price competition)
  • Con: Fewer Funchal flights than Manchester or Gatwick

Total Estimated Cost (Both Legs, 2 Passengers, Return)

Routing Budget Estimate (total, 2 pax return) Notes
Via Manchester £350 - £900 Best balance of cost and flexibility
Via Liverpool £350 - £900 Cheapest if dates align with Jet2
Via Gatwick £400 - £1,000 Most flexible, slightly costlier
Via Bristol £350 - £900 Good middle option
Via Birmingham £400 - £950 Reliable but less competitive

These are rough ranges for peak summer. Booking well in advance (75+ days) typically secures better prices.

Connection Timing Considerations

Per the planning rules: if the gap between arriving at the UK airport and the onward flight departing is less than 3 hours, an overnight stay in the UK is needed. This applies in both directions.

Important points:

  • These are separate bookings on separate airlines (no through-ticketing), so you must clear baggage and re-check in
  • Allow time for potential delays on the IoM leg, especially in changeable island weather
  • An overnight stay is actually the safer, less stressful option for a holiday, particularly with luggage
  • Morning IOM flights connecting to afternoon Funchal flights (same day) would be tight but possible at Manchester or Gatwick if there’s a 4-5 hour gap
  • Return journeys (Funchal to UK, then UK to IOM) present the same challenge

Charter and Seasonal Flights

  • No charter flights operate from the Isle of Man to Madeira (or to anywhere outside the British Isles)
  • Jet2 is launching a new London Gatwick to Funchal route from October 2026 (too late for this trip)
  • Ryanair’s Edinburgh-Funchal service is seasonal and may operate in summer
  • TUI offers package holidays with flights from Manchester and Birmingham to Funchal, but flight-only bookings are also available
