Getting There

From Calais (Eurotunnel Terminal)

  • Distance: 93 km
  • Drive time: Approximately 1 hour 10 minutes
  • Route: Follow the A16 motorway towards Dunkirk, then take the A25 towards Lille/Ypres. Exit onto the N225 south towards Ypres.

From Bruges

  • Distance: 78 km
  • Drive time: 50-60 minutes
  • Route: Direct route via the E403/A19

The Sites

In Flanders Fields Museum

Location: Grote Markt 34, 8900 Ieper (inside the Cloth Hall)

The essential starting point for understanding the Great War in Flanders. This world-class museum occupies the second floor of the magnificently rebuilt Cloth Hall.

What to expect:

  • Each visitor receives a “Poppy Bracelet” containing a microchip, activating personalised stories as you move through the exhibitions
  • Access to the Belfry Tower included
  • Allow 2-3 hours for a thorough visit

Menin Gate & Last Post Ceremony

Location: Meensestraat, eastern edge of Ypres town centre

The Menin Gate is one of the most iconic war memorials in the world. The names of more than 54,000 officers and men whose graves are not known are inscribed on its panels.

The Last Post Ceremony:

Every evening at exactly 20:00, traffic is halted and buglers from the Ypres Fire Brigade sound the Last Post beneath the memorial’s arch. This tradition has continued almost unbroken since 1928.

Tips:

  • Summer months can be very busy; arrive 30-45 minutes early
  • Photography permitted but no flash
  • Remain silent and respectful throughout
  • The memorial was fully reopened in Spring 2025 after restoration work

Tyne Cot Cemetery

Location: Vijfwegestraat 4, 8980 Passendale

The largest Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery in the world. The sheer scale—nearly 12,000 burials—provides a profoundly moving experience.

What to see:

  • Almost 12,000 graves, most from the Third Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele)
  • Memorial wall commemorating nearly 35,000 soldiers with no known grave
  • Cross of Sacrifice built on a German pillbox

Passchendaele Museum

Location: Berten Pilstraat 5a, 8980 Zonnebeke

Housed in the grounds of Zonnebeke Chateau, this museum underwent extensive renovations and reopened in full glory on 5 April 2025.

Highlights:

  • Newly renovated exhibition (2025)
  • Recreated dugout experience
  • Personal stories and authentic artefacts
  • Audio guide included with admission (children’s version available)
  • Received one Michelin star in the 2025 Belgium guide

Hooge Crater Museum

Location: Meenseweg 467, B-8902 Zillebeke

A privately-run museum with one of the finest WWI collections in the area.

Highlights:

  • Extensive collection of uniforms and equipment
  • Interactive “Hooge Boys’ trail” for children
  • Good café with indoor seating for 120 and outdoor terrace
  • Well-stocked gift shop

Sanctuary Wood Museum (Hill 62)

Location: Canadalaan 26, 8902 Zillebeke

A unique privately-owned museum run by the grandson of the farmer who reclaimed the land in 1919. Features preserved original trenches you can walk through.

Highlights:

  • Authentic preserved trenches behind the museum
  • Rare collection of 3D stereoscopic photographs
  • Original weapons, uniforms, and artefacts
  • Muddy underground tunnel (boots recommended!)

  • The ground is uneven; may not be suitable for wheelchairs in some areas

Hill 60

Location: Zillebeke, 4.6 km south of Ypres centre

An atmospheric battlefield site where fierce mining warfare took place. The landscape still bears the scars of massive mine explosions.

What to see:

  • Preserved mine craters
  • Information panels
  • Memorial to Queen Victoria’s Rifles
  • Adjacent to the Caterpillar crater

Note: There is no longer a museum on site (closed 2006), but the preserved landscape is powerfully evocative.


Essex Farm Cemetery & John McCrae Site

Location: Diksmuidseweg (N369), 1.5 km north of Ypres

The site where Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae wrote “In Flanders Fields” in May 1915. The cemetery, bunkers, and memorial form a deeply moving ensemble.

What to see:

  • 1,200 war graves
  • Memorial to John McCrae with the poem in multiple languages
  • Restored concrete bunkers from the Advanced Dressing Station
  • Albertina marker commemorating 3 May 1915

Langemark German Cemetery

Location: Klerkenstraat, Langemark (5-6 km north of Ypres)

A sombre contrast to the Commonwealth cemeteries—dark, austere, and deeply affecting. Over 44,000 German soldiers are buried here.

What to see:

  • Mass grave (Kameradengrab) containing 24,917 soldiers
  • Sculpture of four mourning figures by Professor Emil Krieger
  • Black entrance tunnel with historical displays
  • The grave of fighter ace Werner Voss

Talbot House (Toc H) - Poperinge

Location: Gasthuisstraat 43, Poperinge (entrance via Pottestraat)

A remarkable “living museum” where soldiers of all ranks found rest and recreation during the war. Still functions as a guesthouse today.

What to see:

  • “A House of People” permanent exhibition (2020)
  • Original rooms including the chapel in the attic
  • Play the piano, enjoy complimentary tea
  • Option to stay overnight in guest rooms

If You Have More Time

Day 1 evening (after Last Post): If energy permits, the Ramparts walk at dusk is atmospheric.

Day 2 morning (early start): Add Passchendaele Museum before Tyne Cot if you leave by 08:00. This is 30 minutes each way from Ypres.

Alternative: Swap Sanctuary Wood for Essex Farm & John McCrae site if the poem’s history matters more than walking original trenches.

Optional Addition

If you have time, add a half-day trip to Poperinge (15 minutes west of Ypres) to visit Talbot House.

Getting Around

  • Most sites are well-signposted
  • Ypres town centre is easily explored on foot
  • A car/campervan is essential for the more distant sites (Tyne Cot, Passchendaele, Hill 60)
  • Guided tours available from Flanders Battlefield Tours

What to Bring

  • Waterproof footwear (trenches can be muddy)
  • Torch for tunnels
  • Tissues (the sites can be emotionally affecting)
  • Camera (photography permitted at most sites; no flash at Last Post)

Accessibility

Most major sites have good wheelchair access. Notable exceptions:

  • Sanctuary Wood trenches (uneven ground)
  • Some tunnel sections
